OIDA Sponsored Webinar – Taming a Mid-IR OPO – Realizing the Widest Tuning Range for High Resolution Spectroscopy

The 1.45 – 4um spectral region contains important spectroscopic signatures of many molecules. Semiconductors laser sources operate within this region, but they have very limited tuning ranges. Many such devices are required in order to have similar coverage. Optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) offer much wider tuning ranges than semiconductor lasers, and they have been commercially available for some time. However, wide wavelength coverage has been available only from pulsed OPOs, which necessarily have large linewidths that limit their utility for tunable laser molecular spectroscopy. CW OPOs have narrow linewidth that allows for high resolution spectroscopy. However, CW OPOs to date have suffered from mechanical stability and alignment issues, so that their tuning ranges are limited to approximately 700nm.

Recently, TOPTICA Photonics engineered a CW OPO that solves these issues, and for the first time offers a CW OPO that can cover 1.45 – 4um without realignment. Motorized control of all tuning elements enables computer controlled, hands free tuning over this entire range. In this webinar, TOPTICA will discuss the design and capabilities of their OPO, and conduct a live spectroscopy demonstration.
